WORKSHOPS FOR TEACHER TRAINING – 2010

INCREASING MOTIVATION AND SELF ESTEEM IN STUDENTS

Based on classroom observations as well as research, we know self-esteem is important to student achievement. Too often schools see children whose low self esteem interferes with their learning and too often we fail to relate to troubled students in an affirming way. In this workshop you will examine motivational theory and strategies to find successful ways to increase self-esteem and motivation in K-12 students. This practical workshop will illustrate ways to achieve quick, positive results with students.

EMPOWERING DISINTERESTED STUDENTS

Empower students to take responsibility and ownership for their learning. Observe an increase in student self-worth and attendance while decreasing disciplinary issues and dropout rates. These techniques will benefit you and your students with a clearer understanding of the basic needs for love, power, fun, freedom, and survival, thereby, increase empathy and community. Appropriate for grades 3-12.

TRANSFORMING UNDERACHIEVERS INTO SELF-RELIANT LEARNERS

Too many students are underachieving and appear to lack self-discipline, motivation or organization. Yet, most of these students really do want to achieve when one or more essential ingredients are present. Produce long-term success within a high-trust and less-stress classroom environment with the wide range of practical strategies, research and resources from this workshop. You will develop efficient trouble-shooting strategies; gain more expertise with a repertoire of solutions; and integrate student self-reliance into your curriculum. This workshop is flexible to adapt to your needs, and appropriate for teachers of grades 3-12.

PARENTS: ADVERSARY OR ALLY?

Research and teacher experience has demonstrated the importance of positive family involvement to student achievement. How can we create relationships and a climate where all families are allies and not adversaries of education? This workshop will explore ways to enlist positive support of families. We will review home visitation strategies parent groups, conferences, phone calls and written communication. This workshop will provide K-12 teachers with a wide variety of ideas to use immediately with parents.

COUNSELING SKILLS FOR EDUCATORS

You don't have to be a counselor to apply some basic counseling skills. You will find the techniques this workshop provides invaluable in working with a wide variety of K-12 student situations. You will read and practice the kind of interview and listening skills which will help you to achieve greater understanding of students who may be unmotivated, angry, withdrawn or otherwise hard to reach. Models for increasing student communication will be explored.

UNDERSTANDING CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT

Recent decades have brought to light one of the most serious problems facing American soviet today: child abuse and neglect. It severely impacts individuals, families, institutions, communities, health, welfare, education and justice systems. Participants will explore feelings, facts and statistics relating to child abuse, the family, and circumstantial and societal factors that support or discourage child abuse. This workshop will explore the guidelines you need to know for responding to abuse and neglect. Intervention strategies and treatment considerations will be covered as well as prevention curricula and their use in schools.
