NINE TIPS FOR FAMILIES AS THEIR CHILDREN'S FIRST TEACHER

Families are their children’s first teacher. From the families, the children receive their foundation for excelling in their school experience as well as acquiring their love for learning.

Here are nine tips that families can start using today:

1.   Talk with and listen to your children as you play and do daily activities together

2.   Read with your children at a regular time every day when they ask you.

3.   Take toddlers and preschoolers to the library so that they can choose books to read at home. Find out about your library's special books and services.

4.   Create a special place in your home for your children to read and write.

5.   Keep books and other reading materials where children can reach them. Add new books often.

6.   Keep writing materials such as washable, nontoxic crayons and markers, paints and brushes, and different kinds of paper where your children can reach them.

7.   Take books and writing materials for your children with you whenever you leave home, so that they can read or write at the doctor's office, on the bus, and in the car.

8.   Point out to your children the printed words in your home and in the community.

9.   Encourage your children to do things for themselves when they are ready. Let them feed and dress themselves, and clean up after themselves even if these tasks take more time and are not done perfectly.
