Become an Independent Consultant

An Independent Consultant (IC) can work in a variety of nonprofit and for profit settings and take on a vast array of tasks. ICs can be found conducting staff training, supervision, surveys, case reviews and recommendations, program evaluations, and so on. The common denominator is that whatever the task the IC takes on he or she is expected to perform with a high degree of efficiency and professionalism.

Five Traits of Successful           Business People - Independent Consultants or Otherwise

A study conducted by Dr. Albert Shapiro of the University of Texas Graduate School of Business identified five traits common to successful business people:

1.Self-motivated doers set long-range goals but don't dwell on them. Most of the time they concentrate on day-to-day implementation.

2. They don't worry. The possibility of failure is taken for granted: it's nothing to worry about.

3. They don't intimidate themselves by setting grandiose goals and overwhelming challenges.

4. They don't set limited working hours.

5. Outwardly, they tend to be modest and chalk off their achievements to `luck," but inwardly they have a strong belief in their power over events.

    Successful Consultants Manage Time

    Effectively

Successful consultants are busy people. You have to meet with clients, market your services, be present for your family, and find opportunity for personal and technical growth. In other words you must be good at managing time.

The management of time is a state of mind. It requires shedding a lot of old habits in favor of Planning, Choosing, and Prioritizing.

Here are five major principles of time management:

1.There is no such  thing as the lack of time to do the things you want or need to do.

2. Direct yourself towards effectiveness, not efficiency.

    3. Time management takes willpower and self-

        control

    4. Time management allows you to gain                   freedom and greater flexibility in taking

        back control of your life.

     5. Answer yourself. "What is the best

possible use of my time at this moment."
