Childhood Depression and Suicide

Depression can be present in very young children. Depressed children are often cranky and irritable for extended periods of time. They may complain about aches and pains, without real physical problems. They may withdraw completely from family and friends. If depression intensifies, they may engage in dangerous, risk-taking behaviors.

Help your child develop a sense of self-worth by acknowledging accomplishments and efforts. Let your child know that you are available to talk or help with problems by setting a regular time to meet. Set an example with your healthy approach to handling family and personal problems.

If you see signs of depression, talk with your child immediately about what's going on. Help your child find solutions to problems that may be causing depression. If your child's mood does not improve or there are threats of self-harm or self-hurtful behaviors, seek professional help at once.
