Seven TECHNIQUES FOR HELPING AN
AGGRESSIVE CHILD IN THE CLASSROOM
Chances are you have one or more aggressive
children in your classroom. If you only have one aggressive child in your
classroom, you’re pretty lucky.
However, you can’t allow that child
aggressiveness to affect the other children’s learning experience or their
safety. Although the terms, he and him, are used throughout this article, these techniques
apply to boys and girls.
1.
Stick with the child through his tantrums.
Hold the child firmly (not angrily) until the child calms down.
2.
Praise the child for any positive behavior
you notice. Comment positively on the child's appearance
3.
If the child has trouble most often in
transition times, be sure to be close to him at those times and have a plan for
him to help you.
4.
If the child has a hard time waiting, start
out letting him go first, then move him to second. Praise him for being able to
wait a little. This child needs affection. Be affectionate, hug, and move
physically close.
5.
Rock this child on your lap and sing to
him. Make up a special song about the
child. The child may resist at first, but just continue as he needs it.
6.
Hold the child on your lap and read a story
to him.
7. Express confidence in the child and communicate expectation
of success, (I know you can do it).
Tell the child how special he is.
